I’ll be honest. When my team suggested I launch a podcast I thought it was a crazy idea. It seemed like really outdated technology to me. I mean, in today’s age of video who wants to listen to audio? Was I ever wrong! Like many others I’ve gotten completely hooked on podcasts! Not only on producing my own podcast, Create Warriors, but listening to others as well. So it got me thinking about why podcasts are exploding in popularity and what the benefits are for you.
Many people have also mentioned to me that they are not sure how to listen to podcasts on mobile devices. So I’ll cover that for you too.
The top 5 reasons podcasts are exploding in popularity :
2) Podcasts are free! You can get incredible information, inspiration and helpful tips without it costing a dime. Or a penny. Or anything. Hear from today’s top thought-leaders for absolutely nothing. That’s pretty awesome!
3) We have the technology. All the devices in our lives perfectly support listening to podcasts…smartphones, tablets, mp3 players. To say nothing of the various fashionable headgear.
4) High-speed internet. With access to wi-fi almost everywhere, including many public parks and increasingly faster cell service, you have to put some serious effort into being disconnected now-a-days. So podcasts are always there, when you need them.
5) Unlimited variety. Let’s face it. Even with 200 or more tv channels it can be impossible to find something to watch. With podcasts, there are literally thousands of choices on every subject imaginable. You’re never without something to listen to.
Have I got you all primed on the benefits of podcasts? Are you ready to jump aboard and join the cool kids? Are you a little unsure how to go about it? It’s easy peasy.
Here’s how you listen to podcasts:
Listen on Desktop and Laptop Computers
You can listen to podcasts on your desktop and laptop computer by going to their website, blog, or wherever it resides. For example, you’ll find my podcast, Creative Warriors on my blog. Search for podcasts online by subject or recommendations from friends.
Or, if you’re a Mac user, you can open up your iTunes app and in the upper right corner, click on iTunes Store. You’ll see there’s an option at the top for podcasts. You can look at what’s New & Noteworthy or you can search by categories that interest you on the right side. If you know of a particular podcast or person you’re looking for, you can also search the store in the upper right corner.
If iTunes isn’t your thing, you can also go to Stitcher.com. It’s a nice clean website for podcasts. Click on Top Shows to see what’s hot. Or click on Listen if you want to browse. You can also build your own list of Favorite podcasts.
Listen On Mobile Devices and Tablets
For iPhones and iPads, I suggest using the Podcasts app. You can subscribe to your favorite podcasts. As a new episode comes out, it will download automatically and will let you know which new episodes you haven’t listened to. This makes it super easy to access and listen to your favorite podcasts while multi-tasking. It’s free in the iTune App store.
For Androids, the Stitcher App is the way to go. Easy to use and you can save a playlist of your favorite podcasts.
